Ohhh the Irony!!!
There is such irony in creating an online blog about getting into the outdoors, but with our increasing reliance on technology, I believe that it is a great medium to contact a large number of people. Before I get too far into the great irony of reading online about going into the outdoors and disconnecting from it all, I will explain what ElevateOutdoors is all about…
A main obstacle preventing people from going outdoors is the convenience and the availability of other types of entertainment. It is more convenient to turn on the television, the game system or the computer instead of going outside. You also don’t need to get dirty to watch television or play a video game. What stands out the most, however, is that passive leisure and inactivity is becoming a habit for those of us who are growing up with technology. This needs to change for the health and wellbeing of everyone. This blog aims to help to do this by creating easy alternatives to passive leisure and driving a renewed interest in the outdoors and outdoor activities. Through ElevateOutdoors, I hope to affect how free time is spent through creating awareness about the benefits of and to provide easy ideas for going outdoors. In his research in 2008, R. Tagles said that “…the absence of direct experiences of natural environments appears to be a significant disadvantage in terms of development and health, and may also have a negative impact on the preservation of natural environments.” We need these natural spaces around, for food, for activities, for industry, for the health of the planet, and most importantly our own sanity.
Through ElevateOutdoors, I am not going to preach to you. I am not going to tell you to throw away all of your technology. I am not going to tell you to go live in the bush for a month. Feel free to do any of these things if that is what you wish. What I am here to do is to share my learning about the benefits of unstructured time in the outdoor, natural areas, things that grow, living actively, and share with you the enjoyment that can be gained from creating balance in our ever technological-focussed lives.
This blog about the outdoors, experiences, adventures, nature and just going outside can be broken down into seven main areas. Why seven? Seven sounded like a good number, and it is also the logical number of areas that my brainstorming could be arranged into. Today is also the 7th. More irony for you! The seven areas of the outdoor that this blog will focus on are:
Check back regularly to read new entries and feel free to post your thoughts, events, ideas, things you want to hear more about (I have lots of stats!) or general ramblings about the outdoors. I am also happy to sit down (or go for a walk) to chat about everything outdoors, and would love to see more ways in which people can get together and go outside. New blog posts will be updated on Wednesdays of each week!
Now for my first idea: Disconnect and go outdoors for 30 minutes. Just go for a walk, and take a look around and see all of the natural things that surround you, even within the city just out of your front door. This video entitled “23 1/2 Hours” will help to explain what I am getting at.
